Searching for family history on the Kampeska family of the Sisseton area.
Searching for the burial of Mary aka Ipatannajin Kampeska Harris (great grandmother). She died July 10, 1896 in the Peever area. She was married to Stanley Harris.
Believe her father was David Kampeska and mother was Iynduzewen. At least the names and dates match up from the Indian Census records. Her children were George, Benjamin and Joseph. George (grandfather) is buried in the Peever cemetery. Stanley Harris remarried after Mary's death and moved to Canada.
Did both David and Iynduzewen die around 1913?

did you check the land records, to see if Kampeska had a land allotment? You might try asking Tamara ifshe can help with the death dates on your Kampeskas. You also might try the sisseton Tribal office tosee if they can help. ___________________ update: Here is what I have found in my records : the handwritten listing of the prisoners arrested in 1862 at Camp Release included: #76 Kampaysona- sioux #232 Kampayska ______________ Listing of those tried at Mankato included Kampayska to be hung. ______________ sara's listing of prisoners at Mankato included a Kanpeska who died. ________________ Listing of families interned at Ft. snelling included Kapeskadan -10 in family. ___________ 1875 sissetonn-Wahpeton Land allotments shows kampeska getting 4 allotents of 40 acres each. ______________ 1887 siseton-Wahopeton Land Allotments included: Kampeska Matoiyotankana - John Kampeska Daniel Kampeska ___________ do these naes ring a bell with you amman? _______________ Update: 1910 US Census Agency,Roberts,SD lists: John Kampeska age38 yr Ida kampeska age 39 James son age 18 Edward age 14 Wales son age 12 Winfield age 10 Gable son age 5 Alice daughter age 1 Mother Mazatopawiin age 60 _________ Daniel Kampeska age 78 Inuduzewin Age 70 Kespu dau. age 42 ________________ Nothing further on David Kampeska Hope this helps.

Yes, I do have their land records. I wonder if David and Daniel were the same person. First I see it as David and then I see it as Daniel. Both with Iyuduzewin. Some records have David as being about 20 years older than his wife Iyduzewin. I believe that John Kampeska is a different line. Did David have a brother. Or was David married to two wives?

amman: I don't know.when a man did , his brother would take in the widow and her children. it is possible that david may have died and Daniel took in the widow, or like you conjectured they may be the same person, going by different first names. what is even wierder is I could not find anything on David or Daniel at ancestry until I had Ancestry check the US Censuses. is there a Daisy kampeska ain your tree. That was th eonly name Ancestry would give on the Indian Census schedules. she was 3 yrs old. but Ancestry would not show the census image for her. go figure. I wonder if kampeska(on the 1887 land allotments) may have been a brother of John Kampeska, or a father of David/Daniel?but i have no way of checking this out.

I believe David was "Kampeska" ... he was born in about 1827 ?? I am able to check ancestry.com so have found quite a few Indian census records for David Kampeska and Iyuduzewin. But several times it appears that David and Daniel were the same person???

After Stanley's wife (Mary Kampeska) died, Stanley remarried (Annie Gerdes or something like that) and moved to Canada. Stanley died in Canada in 1918 during the flu epidemic.

No because Mary Kampeska was full blood and Stanley Harris was non Indian so that made my Grandpa George Harris 1/2 Indian.

I was told Kampeska means white shell. So, that's the "ska" that you say means white.
